Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN C39 No.99 Turkish GP 2020 Sauber 500th Race Antonio Giovinazzi
The Sauber team no longer exists in name, but it has not disappeared completely, as it continues to compete in Formula 1 under the name Alfa Romeo. The team's history dates back to 1993 and in 2020 they will reach an important milestone at the Turkish Grand Prix, when they will have completed their 500th Grand Prix in Formula 1.
Since 1993, the Italian-Swiss team has been through many eras. It has been a top team, a massive midfield and a member of the beaten track. Much to Alfa Romeo's chagrin, in 2020 they were mostly in the latter group, so the best they could hope for on this important anniversary was a strong points finish.
However, the autumn weather in November thoroughly shuffled the cards and the order of strength in Turkey, giving teams like Alfa Romeo a chance to finish ahead by fishing in the murky waters. And Antonio Giovinazzi took advantage of the opportunity. This time, the Italian, who had only occasionally survived Q1, made it into Q3 in the rainy conditions and finished 10th in qualifying. However, he failed to convert his good grid position into points as the Alfa Romeo C39 gearbox failed on lap 11, which meant the Italian had to end the race early.
